Psychotherapy has many benefits and risks for it often involves discussing unpleasant aspects of your life. During this process, you may experience uncomfortable feelings like sadness, depression, guilt, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness. Another situation that might come to play a significant role during this time is that other people in your life may not be happy with the changes you decide to make, which can cause problems in relationships. On the other hand, psychotherapy has also been shown to have many benefits. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, increased self-awareness and autonomy from issues that previously affected us, significant reduction in feelings of distress, etc. Although these are some of the possible outcomes of your participation in therapy, there are no guarantees that it will happen.
